Mullard – The Blackburn Thermionic Valve (Vacuum Tube) Factory

Founded by Captain Stanley Mullard the Mullard Valve company became one of the major names in the manufacture of thermionic valves, or vacuum tubes as our American cousins called them.

The Mullard name also became synonymous with the manufacture of cathode ray tubes used in television sets and they made other components such as capacitors too. The giant Dutch Phillips company was a major shareholder in Mullard from the early days and when the Mullard brand name eventually disappeared it became Phillips Components.

I was reminded of all this when I came across the video below on YouTube. It appears to have been made in the 1950’s and shows the process of Mullard valves being made in their factory in Blackburn in the North West of England.
