How does a microwave oven work?

Virtually every kitchen has a microwave oven these days. They have become such a part of everyday life that we all take the humble microwave for granted, but have you ever stopped and wondered how exactly they cook your food?

Well in basic terms a device called a magnetron inside the microwave oven produces electromagnetic radiation in the ‘microwave spectrum’, these are aimed into the oven itself where they hit and penetrate the food being cooked. These microwaves ‘excite’ the water molecules in the food causing them to vibrate an heat up thus heating the food.

Now that was a very basic and not very satisfactory explanation so I set out to find a video that made more sense. I found several candidates on YouTube of which my favourites were the two below. The first is by the NakedScientists, the second by Engineerguy.
